TIRANA, April 7 /ATA/ During a “virtual visit” to Albania, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Palmer met with top representatives of Albanian politics, such as PM Rama, President Meta and DP head Basha but with those whom the US embassy in Tirana has named as ” the champions” of justice reform.

In a message on Facebook, the US Embassy in Tirana revealed details from Palmer’s virtual meeting with the “champions” of Justice Reform in Albania from state institutions, independent justice institutions, media, civil society and academia.

During their discussion, DAS Palmer reinforced U.S. support for the implementation of justice reform and its commitment to democratization, strengthening rule of law, and combating corruption in Albania. He recognized the work of all the participants in advancing judicial reform and the rule of law, telling them that their dedication is essential to further Albania’s EU accession progress, and it is enabling the country to become a stronger democracy.

“Justice reform is not easy, quick, or perfect, but it is beginning to show results now – and we will continue to support you as you push forward to implement reforms, both with our advocacy and with our assistance programs… The United States will stand with you as you change the entrenched culture of corruption and impunity in Albania,” DAS Palmer said.

U.S. officials are looking forward to coming to engage in-person with other champions of justice reform when the pandemic situation ends. Yesterday’s event was just a start, as U.S. support for justice reform will continue.
