TIRANA, Feb 16 /ATA/ – Albanian Supreme Court and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to modernise the judiciary through the development and implementation of an artificial intelligence-assisted system to anonymise court decisions.

The initiative aims to strengthen transparency and public access to jurisprudence while ensuring robust protection of personal data and fundamental rights.

The system will enable the automatic redaction of sensitive data in judicial decisions, reducing risks linked to the exposure of personal information, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, minors, survivors of gender-based violence and marginalised communities.

The Supreme Court will provide legal expertise at all stages of the project, from design to implementation, and will play a leading role in establishing standards for the ethical and responsible use of technology in the justice system.

Supreme Court President Sokol Sadushi said the cooperation with UNDP had entered the implementation phase.

“This project marks an important moment in our efforts to build a justice system that is more transparent, more efficient and better protected from the risks associated with the exposure of personal data,” Sadushi said, adding that the court remained committed to expanding cooperation on future innovation projects aimed at strengthening the rule of law.

UNDP Resident Representative in Albania Randi Davis said the agreement reflected a shared vision of a justice system that embraces innovation while safeguarding fundamental rights and privacy.

The project will initially be rolled out at the Supreme Court level with the aim of developing a proof of concept that could later be extended across the wider judicial system. Funded by UNDP, the initiative is expected to be implemented over a one-year period.

Through the agreement, the Supreme Court and UNDP reaffirmed their commitment to the ethical use of technology to enhance accountability, protect privacy and ensure more equal access to justice.

TIRANA, March 14 /ATA/ – Albania’s Human Development Index (HDI) value for 2022 was 0.789, which puts the country in high human development category positioning it at 74 out of 193 countries and territories, according to the latest report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Thursday.

Human Development Report (HDR) 2023/24, titled “Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining cooperation in a polarized world”, reveals a troubling trend: the rebound in the global Human Development Index (HDI) – a summary measure reflecting a country’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, education, and life expectancy in a country.

“The widening human development gap revealed by the report shows that the two-decade trend of steadily reducing inequalities between wealthy and poor nations is now in reverse. Despite our deeply interconnected global societies, we are falling short. We must leverage our interdependence as well as our capacities to address our shared and existential challenges and ensure people’s aspirations are met,” said Achim Steiner, head of the UN Development Programme.

The report highlights that deglobalization is neither feasible nor realistic in today’s world and that economic interdependence remains high. It points out that no region is close to self-sufficiency, as all rely on imports from other regions of 25 percent or more of at least one major type of goods and services.

The report notes that in 2023, all 38 countries that are members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) achieved higher Human Development Index (HDI) scores compared to their levels in 2019.
