TIRANA, April 30 /ATA/ The underground city of Kukës, originally built decades ago by the former communist regime as a shelter for residents in the event of an attack, is now set to become one of Albania’s most remarkable tourist attractions.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, also the Socialist Party chairman, made this announcement during a campaign event in the Kukës region. He noted that “an international competition is in the works for the development of the underground city of Kukës, which will also include the ‘Turizmi’ hotel as part of the project.”
Rama said the underground city will be front and centre in the government’s fourth term, with the potential to become one of Albania’s top tourist attractions. He recalled past skepticism when he predicted Tropoja would become a tourist destination, noting that despite fierce criticism that vision is now coming to fruition.

Today, Tropoja is clearly on track to becoming a tourist destination. I’m convinced there will be new developments thanks to the Mountain Package, because in Tropoja, for example, it also addresses the issue of chestnut groves, which people consider inherited customary property.

Now I’m telling you that Kukës has great potential. If we work together to develop an attraction—with the underground city as the centerpiece and a magnetic draw—we can achieve this. We are preparing an international competition to determine exactly how the site will be developed, and the competition will also include the ‘Turizmi’ hotel,” Rama stated.

Rama added that it would be no surprise if Kukës reaches 1 million tourists by Albania 2030.
