TIRANA, June 13 /ATA/ – By Maela Marini/ “The non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for 2022-2023 marks an important milestone in Albania’s diplomatic history.”

This is what Odeta Barbullushi, former Deputy Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs (2015-2017), currently Advisor to Prime Minister Edi Rama, said on Sunday in an interview with ATA.

Barbullushi said that “this term as non-permanent member offers excellent opportunities for a greater position and role of Albania in international politics, to contribute to the strengthening of multilateralism, advancing its interests as an Allied country, with an active and constructive policy in the Western Balkans and the Mediterranean, as well as strengthening human rights and greater involvement of women and girls in security issues and peace efforts.”

Albania, she said, “has a unique experience in the region, where it has traditionally played a constructive role in the interests of peace, and is a country which aligns 100% its foreign and security policy with that of the European Union.”

This, according to Barbullushi, gives Albania the opportunity to play a greater role as an articulator of the EU stands in this multilateral platform and the advancement of human rights and issues related to good governance and the rule of law in the region and beyond.

“Lastly, the two-year term as non-permanent member will be a golden opportunity for Albanian diplomacy to operate on a global platform, interact with many actors and articulate positions on a range of peace and security issues in many regions of the world,” Barbullushi told ATA.
Albania was elected on Friday as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term, ’22 -’23, supported by 175 UN member states, out of 190 countries that took part in the vote.
