TIRANA, June 3 /ATA/ – The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Olta Xhaçka said Thursday evening that Albania has delivered on its European Union integration reform measures and the ball is actually in the EU’s court to launch the first intergovernmental conference.

“Albania has done its homework regarding the European integration process and the ball is now in the European Council’s court,” Xhaçka said in a televised interview.

Asked about Albania’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Xhaçka noted “it is a crucial moment also for the fact that Albania is a UN member for 65 years and the country has never been offered the opportunity to become a non-permanent member of the Security Council, the highest global decision-making body.”

“UN is composed of several regions, or geostrategic groups, so to say. Albania is part of the Eastern Europe region and it is this group of nations that has decided to consensually support Albania’s candidacy for a two-year term as non-permanent member of the Security Council. The Security Council consists of 15 members, of which five are permanent: namely the great powers the United States of America, Great Britain, France, Russia and China, and 10 temporary members that hold their seats on a rotating basis each year,” she explained.

“On June 11, five new members of the Security Councils will be elected, including Albania whose candidacy is not contested thanks to a consensual decision among countries in its group following a long process or lobbying campaign, meaning that Albania will for surely become a non-permanent UN Security Council member,” Xhaçka stated.
