TIRANA, April 1 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted on Saturday to the news that was published in the media outlets which report that an Albanian in the UK was held in a cell for 15 hours because British cops mistook his herbal tea for marijuana.
Rama published the article of “The Sun” and the post of an Albanian lawyer in the UK, Andi Hoxhaj, who had shared the news of the arrest of the Albanian painter Agim Agaj after the police had mistaken his herbal tea for narcotics.

“I invite you to read it in full and thank the authors of that sad story, not only on behalf of Agim and the Albanians, but also for shedding light on the ordeal the brave people who immigrated to this great country go through,” Rama writes.

The Prime Minister goes on saying that “Albania is fully committed to providing everything necessary for a successful crackdown on criminal syndicates.”

“However, if Britain cannot show respect for the Albanian community even with actions instead of words, how can we expect successful cooperation between our governments?” he writes.

“We all know the answer, but what I’m not sure is how my friend Rishi Sunak would handle the case if a UK citizen were arrested in Albania for carrying English tea and faced charges of being a drug dealer! This situation is discouraging and Agim’s persecutors must be held to account,” continued Rama.

The Prime Minister clarifies that Andi Hoxhaj is a brilliant member of the Albanian community, who teaches jurisprudence in the UK, while Agim is an Albanian painter and decorator, a worker who paints houses for the British.

“What causes such a grave injustice for these virtuous people to suffer like this in the UK,” says Rama while sharing the post of Andi Hoxhaj, who writes that:
“The police arrested an Albanian because he was carrying mountain tea from Albania, demonstrating the effects of anti-immigrant rhetoric and the portrayal of Albanians as drug dealers. Therefore, cultural and educational relations are key to building ties.”/p.s/m.m/sm/
