TIRANA, July 7 /ATA/- Around 100 foreign tourists received emergency cardiac treatment at Albania’s Mother Teresa University Hospital Centre (QSUT) over the past year, reflecting growing demand for specialised medical care from visitors to the country, cardiologist Dr. Astrit Ceka said on Tuesday.

Ceka said rapid intervention in cases of acute myocardial infarction is critical to saving lives.

“The most common reason patients come to us is chest pain, which is assessed on the basis of clinical presentation, electrocardiogram findings and laboratory tests. The number of foreign patients requiring emergency cardiology care has increased,” he said.

The hospital has performed around 3,000 coronary interventions, including stent implantation and coronary angioplasty, Ceka said.

Of those, about 2,500 were emergency admissions, including 1,700 patients treated in the intensive care unit. Foreign patients accounted for around 100 of those cases, or roughly 6% of all patients receiving intensive cardiac care.

“Our service provides emergency coronary intervention for acute ischemic heart disease 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Ceka said.

He added that outcomes for foreign patients had been very positive, with no deaths recorded among that group.

Recalling a recent case involving a foreign tourist, Ceka said the patient’s relatives had initially been anxious about receiving treatment in an unfamiliar country.

“We did everything possible to make them feel comfortable and build their trust in us, and the results spoke for themselves. About a month after being discharged, the patient said he was very pleased with the care he had received,” he said.

Hospital officials say the professionalism of medical teams, modern technology and specialised care continue to strengthen confidence in the services provided by the university hospital centre.

TIRANA, June 6 /ATA/ – A child diagnosed with nephroblastoma, a rare kidney cancer, at the age of six months has made a full recovery after treatment at the Paediatric Oncohematology Ward of the Mother Teresa University Hospital Centre (QSUT) in Tirana, health authorities said on Saturday.

The Ministry of Health said the child, identified only as Noel, was diagnosed at an early stage and immediately began specialized treatment at the hospital.

Following years of treatment and medical monitoring, Noel has been free of therapy for nine years and is now in full health, the Ministry said.

Doctors described the case as an example of the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment and close cooperation between families and healthcare professionals in achieving positive outcomes.

Now living a normal life, Noel’s recovery offers hope to other families facing similar challenges, the Ministry said.

The Paediatric Oncohematology Service is a specialized unit within the paediatric healthcare system that provides diagnosis, treatment and long-term follow-up for children with blood disorders and cancers, including solid tumors. The unit offers multidisciplinary care based on international paediatric medicine standards.

TIRANA, April 28 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha on Tuesday condemned what he described as the “inhumane treatment” of the opposition Freedom Party chairman Ilir Meta after images of him appearing in court circulated.

Berisha said his main opposition party rejects Meta’s presentation in court inside a glass enclosure, calling it unjustified and inappropriate for a senior political figure. He also said there was no substantiated evidence for the corruption and money laundering charges against him.

Meta, a former president, parliament speaker and prime minister, and current leader of the second-largest opposition party, the Freedom Party, is a “political prisoner,” Berisha said.

He said Meta had been held in pre-trial detention for 17 months and was subjected to psychological pressure and violations of constitutional rights, including what he described as intimidation and abuse.

“DP demands the immediate release of Ilir Meta,” Berisha said, also calling on the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture to investigate the case.

TIRANA, Dec 1 /ATA/ – On World AIDS Day on Monday, infectious-disease specialists in Albania stress that prevention, testing and treatment remain crucial to saving lives.

Esmeralda Meta, an infectious-disease physician at Tirana’s “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Centre, said HIV “is not a punishment” and can be successfully treated when diagnosed early and treated consistently.

“It has been one of the major infectious syndromes here for more than three decades. HIV carries significant medical, social and family-level impact,” she said.

Meta noted that the hospital treats patients aged 14 and above, adding that most cases occur among the “active population”.

She said the most important message on this day is encouraging screening among young people and high-risk groups.

“HIV testing in Albania is available everywhere – in hospitals and primary health-care centres. For pregnant women, early treatment and the prevention of transmission are especially important,” she said.

On current trends, Meta said Albania remains broadly aligned with other countries in the region.

“For young people and high-risk groups, screening is essential. There is still no vaccine, so communication with a specialist about pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis is vital,” she said.

TIRANA, Nov 26 /ATA/ – Albania opened this year’s “16 Days of Activism” campaign against gender-based violence on Tuesday with nationwide awareness efforts until December 10 that marks the International Human Rights Day.

Juarba Guraj, head of the social sector at the National Centre for the Treatment of Domestic Violence Victims, told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) on Wednesday that the shelter is currently hosting four people – one woman and three unaccompanied minors.

The centre treated 41 residents between January and November, including 14 women and 26 children, eight of whom were unaccompanied minors, she said. None were foreign nationals.

From January 1 to November 3, the centre admitted 28 people – eight women and 20 children – and discharged 31, including 10 women and 21 children.

“Three of the minors who left were unaccompanied. No beneficiaries during the period came from the Roma community,” Guraj added.

She said the centre’s annual caseload has remained broadly stable, with most women and girls assisted having completed only basic education. Cases have historically been more common in northern Albania, especially in Kukës, while those from the south mainly came from Fier and Vlora. Awareness levels were higher in Tirana, Durrës and Korça.

The “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” is a global campaign led by UN Women under the UNiTE initiative.

This year’s edition focuses on digital violence – ranging from online harassment and stalking to disinformation, doctored images and the non-consensual sharing of intimate photos – forms of abuse that have grown rapidly with the expansion of online platforms.
