TIRANA, June 18 /ATA/ – After a series of restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the EU Council has adopted the recommendation to review list of the countries residents of which can travel freely to the European Union member states.

The news was announced via the social media by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Olta Xhaçka on Friday.

Albania has been included on the still limited list after several weeks of persistence and hard work of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.

The EU Council’s recommendation is a result of fulfilment of the strict criteria on pandemic control and the measures enforced by Albanian government to effectively address this common challenge.

“Finally, a long awaited decision, after weeks of work and efforts: Albanian citizens can travel to the EU under the same regime as EU citizens. A great development that recognizes Albania’s success in battling COVID-19,” Xhaçka

The Head of the EU Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Luigi Soreca also welcomed the Council’s decision to officially recommend lifting the temporary travel restrictions for Albanian residents, describing it great news for Albanian citizens.

“Great news for Albanian citizens at beginning of the tourist season! The EU Council today officially recommended lifting the temporary travel restrictions for residents of Albania,” Soreca said via Twitter.
