TIRANA, Nov 30 /ATA/ Minister of Interior Taulant Balla received the Permanent Representative of UNDP in Tirana, Monica Merino, with whom he discussed the strategy against illegal possession, misuse and trafficking of small and light weapons.
Balla said that collection and registration of weapons illegally held by citizens in Albania has been a major concern for years, after the 1997 crisis.

“The Government of Albania, in cooperation with foreign institutions and partner countries, is fully committed to addressing this pressing problem which is a threat for public order and security in the country,” he said.
Balla also cited the tragic event that happened today in the municipality of Kamza, where a citizen shot dead his neighbor and wounded another.

“Illegal possession of weapons is always a potential source of serious crimes against the person, as was the serious crime committed today in Kamza Municipality,” said Minister Balla.
He also emphasized that it is the duty of the State Police to continue its crackdown on the phenomenon of illegal possession of weapons.

“The national operation ‘Rule of Law’ should be extended everywhere,” he said.
Minister Balla also announced that UNDP and the government of Poland are significantly contributing to the strengthening of the fire service in Albania, through the donation of various modern equipment.

“Valuable support from UNDP is being provided to fire services in several municipalities, thanks to the funding of the government of Poland, which consists in firefighting uniforms, 3 fire engines and modern rescue equipment,” Balla said.
