Asked in a television interview whether Veliaj would continue serving as mayor, Rama said the issue “remains to be seen.”

Speaking about the possibility of early elections in the Albanian capital, Rama said: “I have asked for a number of opinions – not just one – to figure out how this should be addressed.”

Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) has indicted Veliaj, who has been in pre-trial detention since Feb. 10. He faces at least nine counts of passive corruption and an additional charge of concealing assets, all of which he has denied.
