TIRANA, Feb 12 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Wednesday that the majority has shifted from five years of silence to a new phase, when it will assert the right to offer constructive feedback on standards and violations within processes. However, he stressed that their thinking does not waver: the Socialist Party is not a legal advocate for anyone involved in a process, including Mayor Erion Veliaj.

“The channels are asking for a debate between SP and DP about the case of Erion, meaning they still don’t understand that we have moved from five years of silence to a new phase, when we will afford ourselves the right to provide our constructive feedback on standards and violations in processes. However, we have not changed the essence of our position that the Socialist Party is not a law office for anyone involved in a process, including Erion,” wrote Rama in a post on the X platform.
“Firstly, the imprisonment of the mayor without trial, for an issue unrelated to the conditions under which such a measure is typically applied—arbitrarily breaking his contract with the voters, when the trial could have proceeded while he remained free—relates to standards, not Erion’s guilt or innocence, which should be decided by the justice system, not by the commenters of the Socialist Party,” Rama stated.

“Secondly, Rama continued, ‘We will not be part of the nighttime slanders and insults about justice, especially when the channels act like the courts of medieval marketplaces, where stones are thrown from every direction and the croaking of the political-media swamp reaches its peak.'”

“We will engage in this debate with the people on the pathway to May 11, offering our full support to SPAK and the anti-corruption court, while also speaking out about any concerns regarding mistakes or violations of standards. For instance, it’s concerning that, just before the elections, the Tirana mayor is abruptly removed from office, yet five years after its establishment, SPAK has shown no urgency in delivering justice for January 21 case,” emphasized Rama.
