TIRANA, July 8 /ATA/ – Construction work on the expansion of the Tirana–Durrës highway, one of Albania’s busiest transport corridors, is nearing completion, Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Tuesday.

The project, which will upgrade the road to a Category A motorway, includes the addition of new lanes to ease congestion between the capital and the country’s main port city.

The government head shared footage from the construction site, noting that construction of new lanes is almost complete, while reconstruction of the existing ones is also underway.

Traffic has been temporarily diverted near the Kashar overpass- towards Mother Teresa International Airport – via a newly widened section equipped with temporary signage meeting road safety standards.

The upgraded route will feature four lanes in each direction, including an emergency lane, significantly increasing capacity. Once completed, the speed limit will be raised to 130 km/h.

Work began last year on expanding the highway, which stretches from Kamza overpass in Tirana to Dajlani Bridge in Durrës. Often referred to locally as “Autostrada” since the 1990s, the road is a key artery connecting Albania’s largest administrative, industrial, and tourism centers, as well as key north-south and east-west corridors.

During the peak summer months, daily traffic volumes on the route range between 90,000 and 120,000 vehicles.

TIRANA, Jan 6 /ATA/ – Two more lanes, one emergency lane, will be added as part of an expansion project to transform the existing road linking the capital Tirana to the port city of Durres into a category A highway, the Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, also Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, told a TV morning show on Monday.

Work is already underway to expand the highway linking Albania’s two largest cities under a project designed to refurbish end-of-life road layers and expand the road to handle rising traffic especially during the summer season.

“Tirana-Durrës motorway will be transformed into Category A highway. The current road is a two-lane category B road. Construction work is progressing very well. Around 25% of the construction volume has already completed,” Balluku said.

According to her, work currently focuses on construction of the base course of the two new 3.7-meter wide lanes.

“A fourth 3-m wide emergency lane will be added on both sides and the road will be transformed into Category A highway with speed limit at 130 km/hour, meeting the highest standards with which we are building the new highways across the country,” Balluku said.

Tirana-Durres highway rehabilitation is designed to cope with an influx of 94 000 vehicles and it costs 250 million euros.
