The Director of the Civil Aviation Maksim Et’hemaj told a media interview on Monday that Rinas international airport expects passenger numbers to rise to over 8.4 million in 2024.

Et’hemaj also said that work on expansion of the airport’s runway is scheduled to kick off this month in order to accommodate wide-body aircraft for trans-oceanic flights.

He said that a team of U.S. aviation will visit Albania in March to certify the airport’s security for trans-oceanic flights, adding that Tirana- New York flights are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2025.

Airport authorities also expect four new airlines and eight new destinations will add up to the existing lines this year.

Tirana International Airport recorded an impressive 40% surge in passenger numbers, reaching a total of 7,257,574 passengers in 2023.

The airport’s VIP lounge, which underwent a total renovation project, has been transformed into a space decorated with traditional Albanian motifs.

The government head noted on a social networking post that a number of young boys and girls will be take up high paying jobs starting with 60,000 lek per month.

“VIP lounge for travellers at Mother Teresa Airport is a beautiful space, where finishing touches are being put and educated young boys and girls are sought to take up jobs paying a minimum of 60,000 lek and higher per month, while preparations are underway for the airport to host a record number of visitors during the upcoming tourist season,” PM Rama said.
