TIRANA, Feb 27 /ATA/ After the completion of the challenging underground works, the building of the New National Theater has begun to take shape, with the construction set to be completed within the year.

The new project, conceived by renowned contemporary architect Bjarke Ingels and the Danish firm BIG, seeks to develop a building that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding urban fabric. The design envisions the building as both a performance space and a flexible extension of Tirana’s public realm, with the Theater itself acting as an “actor” in the city’s evolving context.

The project is being developed within the existing site of the National Theater, at the convergence of key pedestrian axes. The structure is articulated into two distinct parts: one dedicated to the actors and administrative functions, and the other to the public, with the primary programmatic element being the theater space. Each part is accessed independently, with the public entry located at the main façade or an alternative access point beneath the arch. Additionally, the building’s roof will serve as a dynamic open-air theater/auditorium, providing tiered seating for a variety of events and activities.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by Minister of Economy, Culture, and Innovation, Blendi Gonxhja, and Deputy Mayor of Tirana, Anuela Ristani, inspected the ongoing work at the construction site today. He emphasized that Albania will have one of the most beautiful theaters built in Europe since World War II.

For his part, Prime Minister Rama emphasized that the New Theater will be the most beautiful national theater in the entire region.

Prime Minister Rama remarked that with a bit more patience, those affected by the loss of the old theater will find relief, as the new theater will be accompanied by a revitalized public square, enhancing central Tirana both in front of and behind the theater.
