TIRANA, May 8 /ATA/ Minister of Health and Social Protection, Ogerta Manastirliu, on the World Thalassemia Day, published a video featuring awareness messages for blood donation to save lives.

“Be a Hero, donate blood for children with thalassemia. Today, on the World Thalassemia Day, make the noble gesture that saves lives,” the minister appeals in her message on this day.

“Today is May 8, the World Thalassemia Day, and I take this opportunity to call on all citizens to unite to donate blood on this important day, in order to help these individuals today and in the future,” the doctor appeals.

Juliana, a thalassemia patient, urges all volunteer donors not to stand by but to donate blood, as every person needs to live.

One volunteer donor said, “Donating blood is a civic duty, each of us must feel as such and do it.”

“Do not wait until you need blood to do your duty as citizens, do it today,” another volunteer donor says.

International Thalassemia Day is organized every year on May 8 in different countries of the world, and aims to raise public awareness about this disease.

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen.

The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia. Anemia is a condition in which your body doesn’t have enough normal, healthy red blood cells.
