The National Agency of Protected Areas said today that the census was carried out specifically in the places called Shegan, Flakë, Kamicë, Bregu i Rërës.

“The census takes place for the fourth year in a row and from year to year there is an increase in the number of registered species. For this year, we have counted 670 individuals, rendered into 335 couples, which are on the verge of nesting”, emphasized the agency.

The agency also said that “Lake Shkodra is the only area in our country where this species nests”.

The whiskered tern nests in aquatic areas, on water lilies, at a depth of about 1 m.

The fauna of Shkodra Lake is diverse and rich with 45 species of fish and 270 species of birds. These birds make up 87% of the entire Ornitofauna of Albania.

A gem of this wealth is undoubtedly the pelican, the largest bird in Europe. The deepest point of the lake is about 45 meters. At the southeastern end lies the city of Shkodra, from which it got its name. /k.s/p.s./
