TIRANA, September 18 /ATA/ –Opened today at the Center for Openness and Dialogue (COD), the exhibition ‘Saint Mother Teresa – A Legacy of Love, Compassion, and Humanism’ celebrates the special connection between Albania and India while commemorating the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

Attending the opening ceremony was Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha and Ambassador of India to Albania Ravindra Prasad Jaiswal.

There are 30 photographs put on display showing moments from Mother Teresa’s visits to Albania as well as her funeral in India, bringing rare glimpses to the fore and drawing public attention back to a legacy that continues to inspire.

“Today, identities are shaped more by our differences than by what we share. Mother Teresa showed us a better way. She never judged people by their passport, nationality, or religion, but valued them simply for their dignity and needs,” Minister Hoxha emphasized.

On his part, Ambassador Ravindra Prasad Jaiswal stated, “Mother Teresa represents the very best of Albania and its people. Yet, her mission found a natural home in India’s timeless philosophy: that the divine lives in every human being, and serving the poor is akin to serving God. Her incredible impact on India built a connection between our nations that goes far beyond friendship—it created an unbreakable, lasting bond.”

This exhibition honors Mother Teresa’s memory and the lasting values of humanity, solidarity, and respect for human dignity that she lived by.

Through this photographic journey, Albania and India celebrate a shared icon who continues to bridge their two peoples and inspire the world beyond national borders. /p.s./

TIRANA, September 5/ATA/ Today marks one of the most important dates for the figure of Mother Teresa, Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, the day when she was declared a saint by Pope Francis, becoming Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

10 years on after that historic moment, the figure of Mother Teresa continues to remain a global symbol of love, mercy and service to people in need.

On September 4, 2016, in St. Peter’s square in the Vatican, Pope Francis led the Mass for the Canonization of Mother Teresa. The ceremony took place within the framework of the Jubilee of Mercy and gathered more than 120 thousand believers, among them many Albanians, reflecting the special connection of the Albanian community with the figure of the saint.

On September 5, 2016, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mother Teresa was declared a saint by Pope Francis in recognition of her two miracles of healing the sick after her death in 1997.

Pope Francis inscribed the name of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, the Albanian nun of charity, in the General Roman Calendar, which regulates the commemorations and celebrations of the liturgical year. The Holy Father took into account the requests and wishes of many bishops, priests, religious and faithful, who celebrate the saint on September 5, the day of her death in 1997. This remains an optional liturgical commemoration established by the Pope.

The nun was ‘beatified’ in October 2003 by Pope John Paul II. He approved the first miracle after her death. A 30-year-old woman in Calcutta said she was cured of a stomach tumor after Mother Teresa prayed to her. A Vatican committee said it could find no scientific explanation for her recovery and declared it a miracle.

The Albanian law “On Official Holidays” replaced the official holiday of September 19, which is the Beatification Day of Mother Teresa, with September 5, which is the Day of her Canonization.

Meanwhile, in the United Nations calendar, September 5 coincides with the International Day of Charity, proclaimed as such by the UN General Assembly in honor of Mother Teresa.

Born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Mother Teresa began her mission in Calcutta in 1929. After leaving the Sisters of Loreto in 1950, she founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity, which today has over six thousand nuns active in 130 countries around the world, starting with the poorest and most underdeveloped.

In 1979, the Albanian nun was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and she requested that the money be donated to the poor.

Mother Teresa also visited Albania after the fall of communism, opening the homes of her sisters, who still serve the people today, but especially teach them, by their example, the compassion and mercy with which to care for those in need.

Mother Teresa’s visit to Albania is also preserved in the photographs of the Albanian Telegraphic Agency archive, which document some of the most special moments of her meetings with Albanians.

The photographs bring to mind Mother Teresa’s visit to Albania in 1991, from her arrival at Rinas airport, to the moments of meetings with children and believers, as well as her participation in important religious events.

In one of the moments of the visit, Mother Teresa is seen blessing a child, while other photographs document her participation in the reopening of the Bektashi World Patriarchate and the mass held in the Catholic Church in Tirana.

Mother Teresa also visited Albania in 1989, on one of her first visits. During her stay, she was received at Rinas airport and visited families with whom she had family ties, as well as kindergartens in Tirana.

Another important moment documented in photographs is the visit of Pope John Paul II to Albania in 1993, where among the personalities he met was Mother Teresa.

The ATA photographic archive also preserves moments from Mother Teresa’s activities in Albania, including the opening of the charity house in Tirana, part of her mission to serve people in need.

The photographs also bring to mind the moments of Mother Teresa’s escort to the airport, where she was accompanied by high-ranking authorities of the country, including the then Prime Minister Fatos Nano.

These archival images, preserved over the years by ATA, are evidence of a special chapter in Albanian history and of Mother Teresa’s connection with her country of origin. They capture in time her meetings, greetings, blessings and rare moments in Albania, bringing today a visual testimony of the figure of the Albanian saint.

Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87. /k.s/a.f/r.e/p.s./
