TIRANA, April 2 /ATA/ – The main opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Jorida Tabaku said Sunday that she would support self-employed and freelance professionals in their bid to refer the recent taxation changes to Albania’s Constitutional Court.

The opposition lawmaker said in a post on the social media that “this week was unfortunately a bad week for the country’s economy.

She said that the changes to the tax law, approved by parliament earlier this week, “will increase taxes on more than 17,000 freelance professionals, who will be paying an additional amount of 20 million euros.”

“On the other hand, the minimum wage hike will bring an additional amount of 20 million euros that will be paid in social and health insurance contributions by the middle class. This is the Socialist taxation on the middle class, forcing people belonging to this class to leave the country. They stand meagre chances to succeed in Albania and that’s why they are leaving the country,” Tabaku claimed.

She reiterated her support for the self-employed and freelance professionals to refer the case to the Constitutional Court.

The law approved by parliament aims to exempt the self-employed providing professional services from the income tax rate of 0%. Currently this rate applies to freelancers, commercial and self-employed individuals, and small businesses with an income up to 14 million ALL per year.
