TIRANA, Nov 10 /ATA/ The Chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, declared today that he has not yet been served with any formal summons by the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) in connection with the ongoing investigation concerning the events of the January 21, 2011 protest, during which four protesters lost their lives on the boulevard.
During a media briefing following the conclusion of the parliamentary group meeting, the Chairman of the Democratic Party added that he is interested in a thorough investigation of this incident, while emphasizing that he has always advocated for the appointment of an international prosecutor.
“Personally, I have not received any summons, as Alfred Greca, prior to delivering it to me, distributes it to the media. I have no objection to this. I am the individual who has advocated more than anyone else for a thorough investigation into these tragic events and have consistently called for the appointment of an international prosecutor to oversee the proceedings,” Berisha stated.
“Fortunately, there are official statements from the U.S. government, in which Steinberg, then Assistant Secretary of State, and Thomas Countryman called for investigation to extend from the police officer to the organizer. The identities of the organizers are well-documented. I have repeatedly affirmed that this is standard operating procedure. Nevertheless, I fully support a comprehensive investigation into this incident,” Berisha stated.
The Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) has summoned former Prime Minister Sali Berisha on Friday to question him regarding the January 21 incident.
