TIRANA, Oct 7 /ATA/ The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs expresses its deep regret over the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia on October 4, 2025, which seeks to cast the shadows of the past over a region striving to move resolutely toward the future.

In a press release, the Ministry emphasized that “this statement contains a series of baseless accusations and allegations, which Albania firmly and resolutely rejects.”

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs reminded Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs of several historical truths concerning the real perpetrators behind the tragic events of 1999 — events that resulted in killings, ethnic cleansing, and the forced expulsion of around one million Kosovo Albanians from their homes.

“It is regrettable that the statement of Serbia’s Foreign Ministry continues to rely on the already discredited report by Dick Marty, when investigations by both domestic and international authorities have clearly proven that the allegations contained therein are entirely fabricated and lack any factual evidence,” the MEFA statement reads.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs stated that such fabrications—widely recognized internationally as efforts to smear the image of Albania and Kosovo—can no longer serve as a means of avoiding historical accountability. History is not rewritten through rhetoric; it is remembered through responsibility.

In this regard, the Ministry stressed that “any attempt to distort the truth and to reverse the roles of victim and aggressor is unacceptable and contrary to the very spirit of peace and reconciliation that our region aspires to and deserves.”

Albania’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs expressed its firm belief that the region needs reconciliation, mutual respect, and genuine cooperation in the spirit of good neighborly relations — not a return to the rhetoric of accusations and victimization.

“Only in this way can we finally free ourselves from the shadows of the past and build together a future of peace, security, and prosperity — a united Balkans within our European family, to which we belong by both roots and aspirations,” the statement concludes.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs also emphasized that “Albania has always been, and will continue to be, committed to fostering comprehensive regional cooperation, grounded in good neighborly relations, mutual respect, and a shared sense of responsibility toward our citizens.”

In its statement dated October 4, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs referred to what it called “systematic persecution of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija” and “ongoing ethnic cleansing spanning decades.”

The statement also references the 2011 Council of Europe report authored by Dick Marty, which Belgrade claims contains “concrete evidence” of abductions and inhumane treatment of Serbs during and after the 1999 war, as well as “allegations of organ trafficking in Albania.”
