TIRANA, March 5 /ATA/ The fight against organized crime and improvement of public security are the main priorities for the government and Ministry of the Interior. The results in the fight against crime as a whole have been intensifying over the last few months. Therefore, the State Police are moving down the path of establishing their reputation as the most trusted institution in the country, Minister of Interior Taulant Balla said in his remarks at the international conference on Strengthening Accountability, Anti- Corruption efforts in the Western Balkans, which is being held in Tirana for two consecutive days.

The minister cited the national operations “Tempulli” and “Tempulli 2” resulting in dismantling of 37 criminal groups and bringing to justice 984 citizens, producers, distributors and traffickers of narcotics. Meanwhile, as part of the National Operation “Rule of Law”, 840 citizens were brought to justice.

“The recent sociological surveys show that major police operations launched in recent months are supported by about 70% of citizens. These positive results are also reflected in the latest index of 2023 published by the Global Initiative, according to which, Albania has made the greatest progress of all the countries of the Western Balkans, reducing the level of crime by 0.46 points, compared to other countries of the Western Balkans which have made significant improvement (from 0.04 points (Bosnia and Herzegovina) to 0.28 points (North Macedonia). This difference in points translates into a marked change in the ranking of our country. Globally, it results that Albania has moved up 26 places, while at the European level it has moved up 6 places,” said Balla.

The results, he said, are credited to the dedication and sacrifice of thousands of police officers.

Corruption is a cancer for the democratic and economic development of a country and as such must be fought without any hesitation and without compromise.
“Our responsibility, as institutional actors, is to cure through the efficiency and quality of laws, institutions and change of mindsets, this disease in the organization and in the society. We have a long road to go, but we are more determined than ever to stamp out this phenomenon,” Balla said at the meeting organized by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime.
