TIRANA, April 18 /ATA/ – The U.S. Department of State called on Serbia on Thursday to refrain from unilateral and uncoordinated actions, stating that the U.S. expects immediate release of the deputy director of the Kosovo Police, Dejan Jankovic.

In a statement for the Radio Free Europe, the U.S. State Department urges Serbian authorities to act transparently and fully abide by the law regarding the Kosovo citizens detained in Serbia a day ago.

“Arbitrary or unjustifiably long detentions, especially if they target Kosovo Police officers, will be seen as escalating actions that undermine peace and stability,” a State Department spokesperson told Radio Free Europe, KosovaPress reported.

According to Kosovo authorities, Serbia detained hundreds of Kosovo citizens at the border points with Hungary and Croatia. They were released after more than 18 hours. Five police officials were detained, four of whom were released today, while Deputy Director Dejan Jankovic was given a 48-hour detention.
