Two archive photographs from the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA), taken in the spring of 1990 by photographer Gani Xhengo, offer a snapshot of the ancient city before the country’s transition from communist rule. The site has long attracted both local and foreign visitors since the discovery of its ruins.

Italian archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini led the first systematic excavations at Butrint after being appointed by the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini to head the Italian Archaeological Mission. Work began in 1928, uncovering much of the ancient city’s urban centre, including the theatre and the Sanctuary of Asclepius, as well as more than 30 sculptures. Among the finds were busts of Augustus, Livia and Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa.

The ancient city of Butrint was designated a Cultural Monument in 1948 in recognition of its historical and cultural significance. Its surrounding forest was placed under state protection in 1981 due to its environmental importance.

In 1992, Butrint became the first site in Albania to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The site was declared a National Park in 2000, when UNESCO expanded the protected area from 20 hectares to 29 square kilometres. In November 2005, the government approved a further expansion of Butrint National Park to 86 square kilometres.
