In her remarks, Spiropali pointed out that the system of democratic values has been shaken and the guarantees have been broken by Russia’s brutal and unprovoked war against Ukraine.

“We must recognize, more than ever, the essential importance and extreme sacrifice of journalists and the media in times of conflict,” she said.

The minister went on saying that disinformation is globally recognized as detrimental to the normal functioning of societies, economies and democratic political systems.
“Therefore there is a vital need to develop tools to more effectively protect democracy from ‘weapons against information’, while safeguarding the freedom of expression and freedom of the media as pillars of our societies,” she added.
