TIRANA, Nov 15 /TA/ – By Maela Marini/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama on Saturday described Tirana’s growing traffic congestion as a major challenge and said the government is working with an international expert from Barcelona to help redesign mobility policies in the Albanian capital.

Speaking with residents in Administrative Unit No. 3 in Tirana, Rama said the rapid rise in the number of vehicles has put increasing pressure on the city.

“Tirana was once a capital with around 5,000 cars. Today, the country is heading toward one million vehicles,” he said, adding that the capital’s expansion requires a stronger public transport system and policies that prioritise pedestrians.

Rama said the government and Tirana municipality have hired a leading traffic specialist from Barcelona and will begin applying a model that reduces vehicle speeds inside residential blocks and gives greater priority to children and the elderly.

He dismissed criticism of the city’s mobility reforms, saying traffic solutions “cannot be done with theatrics, insults or noise,” and argued that earlier right-wing administrations in City Hall had reversed progress in the sector.
