TIRANA, Oct 4 /ATA/ – Most recent security situation in the Balkans and in a wider region, as well as Albania’s plans to revive its dormant defence industry were on focus of talks between the Minister of Defence Pirro Vengu and the ambassadors of Spain and Germany in Tirana.

During meeting with Spanish Ambassador, Álvaro Renedo Zalba, Defence Minister Vengu invited Spanish defence industry companies to explore cooperation and investment opportunities to renovate Albania’s defence sector.

Speaking about the dynamics of regional security situation and the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkan countries, Defence Minister Vengu underlined that Albania hails role and lauds Spain’s constructive approach to practical and long-lasting solutions.

Vengu and German Ambassador Karl Bergner discussed ways to boost defence capacities and investment projects on defence industry as part of plans to revive this industry,

“I highlighted importance of infrastructure, namely the Corridor VIII and Porto Palermo port projects,” Vengu said.

Spanish and German diplomats praised Albania’s precious political and military contribution to the EU and NATO missions.

Albanian government plans to revitalize the country’s dormant defence industry. Rebuilding the country’s military industry will require an integrated and coordinated approach to address not only technological and operational aspects, but also legal, financial, economic, social and environmental issues.

This process aims to promote innovation and technological development in defence industry through a close cooperation with the private sector, as Albania is seeking to strengthen its strategic position in the region, becoming a more important defence and security player, in full compliance with the North Atlantic Alliance goals.

The government aims to revive the weapon production plants by partnering with foreign investors through public-private ventures.
