TIRANA, Oct 13 /ATA/ The Socialist Party supports the use of technology in electoral processes, starting with electronic voting and counting.
SP parliamentary group leader Taulant Balla said today that the ruling majority had consistently stressed the need to find a solution to end the situation that arises after elections, when it takes several days of counting to announce the final results.

Asked by journalists following a meeting of the Conference of Chairpersons, Balla said the ruling majority was prepared to discuss implementing electronic voting in several municipalities, depending on the Central Election Commission’s assessment.
The CEC has begun consultations with parliamentary parties on expanding electronic voting and counting in next year’s local elections, with the Democratic Party opposing electronic counting in all municipalities.

Balla added that the ruling majority would agree to electronic voting in three, four or five municipalities if the Central Election Commission deemed it necessary.
Referring to previous experience with electronic voting, he argued that the method could help increase confidence in the electoral process and speed up the announcement of results.
Asked about the proposal to introduce a run-off in mayoral elections, Balla said he opposed electing mayors in two rounds.

“I am personally against electing mayors in two rounds,” Balla said, adding that the ruling majority would state its position on the matter once a concrete proposal had been put forward.
Regarding the date of the 2027 local elections, Balla stressed that the authority to set the date rests with the President of the Republic, in accordance with the law.
He identified one of the Sundays between 15 April and 15 May 2027 as a possible date for the elections.
