TIRANA, June 12 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday there was no provocation or confrontation in the fact that Socialist Party anniversary events were scheduled at the same time as a planned protest against an investment project in coastal area of Zvërnec, southern Albania.

In an interview with Top Channel’s “Shqipëria Live” show, the government head said recent protests reflected differing political views in a democratic society and did not contradict the ruling Socialist Party’s electoral mandate.

“The vote for the Socialist Party with an overwhelming majority does not exclude the fact that part of the people who live in this country and share the democratic space with those who voted for us may have a different opinion and want to express it,” Rama said.

“These are two things that do not exclude each other,” he added.

Rama said governing was not about demonstrating political strength, but about fulfilling a mandate based on an electoral programme.

The Prime Minister added that “some have been elected to lead a historic project, EU membership, while others have chosen to protest against it”, describing both as part of democratic life.

Addressing criticism over the timing of the Socialist Party’s 35th anniversary event, which coincides with the planned protest in Tirana, Rama said preparations had begun months in advance.

He said the party could not reschedule its founding anniversary and noted that the timing was chosen to avoid high daytime temperatures.

“There is no provocation, no confrontation, no concern. Democratic life continues,” he said.
