TIRANA, Sept 26 /ATA/ – Over the past decade, the Ministry of Interior and the Albanian State Police have undergone significant reforms, with a focus on improving public security, aligning with EU standards, and strengthening international cooperation.

According to the government’s 2025 – 2029 internal affairs program, authorities aim to leverage technological innovation to better protect citizens, monitor borders, and ensure rapid emergency response.

Key objectives include tackling organized crime, managing migration and border control through integrated systems, and enhancing international collaboration via smart technology.

The “Smart City” initiative envisions a unified operational center equipped with an integrated network of cameras, sensors, drones, and interactive applications. Authorities aim to reduce police response time to less than seven minutes in 20 cities by 2030.

The government also plans to align legislation with the EU’s legal framework on organized crime, human trafficking, money laundering, terrorism, and child protection.

As part of the modernization efforts, a centralized digital address register- including diaspora residents – will be created, along with upgraded digital identity documents and biometric passports with enhanced security features. The Civil Status Archive will also be digitized.

Other initiatives include a 30% reduction in road traffic fatalities by 2030 through intelligent monitoring, public education, and infrastructure improvements, expanded use of crime mapping tools, drones, and satellite imagery to combat informality and illegal construction, strengthening the Asset Recovery Office to redirect criminal assets into community investments, implementation of Schengen border standards and a “One-Stop” model at key border crossings, creation of a Joint Firefighting Coordination Center and a National Training Center to enable real-time inter-agency response, seasonal drills, and early fire detection using smart technology.

The reform package underscores the government’s commitment to digital governance, citizen safety, and EU integration.

TIRANA, Sept 4 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced his government plans to roll out a nationwide “smart city” system in its fourth term, including AI-powered cameras to monitor public spaces, schools and illegal construction.

Speaking in a political talk show on Thursday evening, Rama said cleanliness across Albania had improved in recent years thanks to government-backed waste management during the summer tourist season, but added that the results remained unsatisfactory.

Rama said the next phase would involve digital monitoring of both territory and public services.

“Soon we will have intelligent cameras in cities monitoring everything – from tracking student attendance to managing schools and ensuring safety in educational facilities,” he said.

He added that an advanced surveillance system would also allow real-time detection of unauthorized construction and other urban problems.

TIRANA, June 29 /ATA/ – Implementation of the SMART CITY project is set to kick off soon in several cities across Albania in a bid to enhance security in community, protect lives, private properties and monitor the road traffic by developing an overreaching system of technological solutions.

The Minister of Interior Taulant Balla and State Police high officials attended the SMART CITY project presentation by representatives from the United Arab Emirates.

The project will expand to 20 major cities and the most visited tourist attractions across Albania.

“The project, whose implementation we expect to begin soon, aims at enhancing security and safety in our communities, protecting life and private properties, and road traffic monitoring,” Interior Minister said.

The radar technology will be used to ensure road safety in the cities where the project will be implemented, while the surveillance cameras will help increase public security. The technology will ensure 24-hour monitoring and will replace policemen as it will employ also the artificial intelligence as a critical step towards a new monitoring and public security system.
