TIRANA, July 11 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting on Friday with mayors to discuss local government performance in relation to the “Albania 2030” vision for the EU.

At the start of his speech, the PM emphasized the special role that local government plays in the country’s integration into the European Union.

“We have gathered here alongside the Minister of Local Government, the Deputy Prime Minister, and several leaders from institutions closely involved with local government to address key issues essential for the effective operation of local authorities and, more importantly, for the country’s overall progress toward the crucial goal of Albania’s EU membership. Local government holds a unique role in the integration process. We come together following a recent historic achievement of securing 83 mandates—a record for any political force—which has placed upon us a much greater responsibility than ever before. This also serves as a remarkable test of our character,” Rama stated.

Rama also emphasized the need to address several key issues, particularly in areas experiencing higher tourist influx.

Rama highlighted the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to tackle several major challenges affecting Albania’s larger cities and towns, particularly those experiencing a high influx of tourists. He pointed out that the shortcomings of local government have become more apparent, partly because the country’s dynamics have changed—no longer serving just its residents but also accommodating a growing number of tourists and visitors. This increase presents new, complex challenges and adds significant pressure on local authorities, especially in areas with the densest visitor concentrations.
One noticeable issue is the internal pressure within businesses to exceed their designated operational limits, leading to encroachments on public land and even illegal constructions in less supervised areas. Rama also pointed to Vlora, where the mayor and local authorities seem to be only half attentive to these issues.
