PRISTINA, Feb 27 /ATA/ – A joint meeting between Kosovo and Serbia financial experts ended in Brussels, with the discussions focusing on the new regulation on cash operations, Kosovo Central Bank said on Tuesday.

A Central Bank high-level delegation participated in the meeting facilitated by the European Union’s Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue and other Western Balkan regional issues, Miroslav Lajčák.

During the meeting, the Central Bank delegation presented and provided arguments related to the recent Regulation on Cash Operations.

“The constitutional and legal authority of the CBK and the regulation imposed by the CBK was not questioned or contested by the EU; however some concerns have been raised about the potential impact on our citizens of the Serbian community. Therefore, participation was deemed necessary to provide appropriate clarifications regarding these concerns and to discuss the legal and technical possibilities for fund transfers,” Central Bank said in its press release.

Furthermore, the CBK has elaborated on detailed technical solutions for transferring funds through transparent banking channels, aiming to facilitate the selection of the most convenient option for transferring funds to beneficiaries’ accounts (in Euro), in accordance with current legal regulations.

Following this meeting, the CBK delegation, at the coordination of the EU, also met with the technical delegation of the Ministry of Finance of Serbia. Within its mandate, the CBK presented and discussed the options it proposed, arguing the possibility and ease of their practical implementation without any alteration to the current legal framework.

TIRANA, Feb 13 /ATA/ -The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O’Brien, stated Tuesday that the United States is deeply concerned over Kosovo government decision to ban the use of Serbian dinar in the country and urged Pristina to backtrack from the decision.

In an interview for the Albanian section of the Voice of America, O’Brien warned that with this decision, Kosovo government has questioned partnership with the United States.

“I don’t issue lukewarm threats publicly. I would say that if we are not treated as a partner, we will not treat the government of Kosovo as a partner either,” O’Brien told VoA.

“Kosovo should entirely withdraw from the decision on banning the use of dinar,” the U.S. senior official said.

The new regulation of the Central Bank of Kosovo, which entered into force on February 1, makes the euro the only currency for payments in Kosovo.

PRISTINA, Feb 12 /ATA/ – Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated Monday that the central bank’s decision to ban the use of the Serbian dinar for cash payments in the Kosovo payments system was irreversible.

However, Kurti underlined that the requests made by the international factors on this issue are being respected.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Kurti reiterated that his government cannot interfere with the decision of the Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) to ban the dinar, but that the decision will not be overturned.

A new central bank regulation entered into force on February 1, stipulating that Euro is the only currency allowed for cash payments in the Kosovo payments system.

“I cannot reverse this decision. But they asked for more time and we are granting more time. Our American and European partners now acknowledge that the regulation is regular, as it helps the fight against terrorism financing and other illegal activities. We won’t haste in full implementation of the regulation. We will not have any kind of punitive measures, we do not want to punish anyone,” he told Bloomberg.
