TIRANA, Sept 22 /ATA/ – Albania will begin implementing cross-border payments through the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) framework on October 7, a move expected to streamline transactions with EU member states and enhance the country’s economy, central bank governor said Monday.

The announcement came during a meeting between Bank of Albania Governor Gent Sejko and the Albanian Association of Banks, with Sejko hailing the move as a “major step” toward faster, cheaper, and safer payments.

“Once SEPA payments become operational, it will increase the use of digital channels for cross-border transfers and bring positive ripple effects across the economy,” Sejko said.

He noted that the central bank has prioritized digital transformation, urging commercial banks to modernize their payment infrastructure, offer more accessible digital products, and invest in cybersecurity and public education.

Accelerating this transition, he added, requires close cooperation between regulators, the banking sector, and consumers.
