TIRANA, Sept 28 /ATA/ President of the Republic Bajram Begaj on Monday convened the National Security Council to review latest developments and their impact on the functioning of security institutions. The President’s office announced that, alongside the members stipulated by law, the Prosecutor General’s Office and SPAK were also invited to take part in the meeting.

In its media statement, the President’s office said the National Security Council discussed the situation and the measures institutions should take to strengthen inter‑institutional cooperation, collaboration with partners and allies, and public trust. The meeting concluded that, in safeguarding national security, institutions do not compete with one another; they carry different responsibilities but serve the same interest — the security of the Republic of Albania.

Same sources emphasised that institutional mistrust must be replaced by cooperation, coordination and professional communication. It underlined that judicial investigations should be conducted independently and respected by all, while individual cases must not be allowed to trigger crises of confidence in the state or its security institutions.

Institutions must demonstrate to citizens that the system is capable of correcting itself and safeguarding the public interest. The President’s office stressed that the task ahead is to strengthen standards, oversight, transparency, accountability and inter‑institutional cooperation.

Albania has institutions, international partners and allies, as well as professionals and capacities. The President’s office said the country’s institutions must work together to strengthen the state, safeguard national security and build citizens’ trust.

The National Security Council does not take decisions. It is an advisory body to the President of the Republic, supporting him in the exercise of constitutional and legal powers. Its meetings are held behind closed doors.

TIRANA, April 2 /ATA/ The plenary session of Parliament started off with debates centered on matters of national security, following a communication from the Embassy of the United States of America regarding potential threats posed by groups affiliated with Iran.

At the beginning of regular plenary session, the DP MP Tritan Shehu expressed concern over the risks associated with Iranian cyberattacks. He emphasized the need for greater transparency from the government regarding the measures undertaken to address these threats.

Following this, the Chairman of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, requested the urgent meeting of the National Security Council.
He contended that recent developments—including the severing of diplomatic relations with Iran and the designation of the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization—require an in-depth institutional analysis.

“National issues are not the exclusive domain of either the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Prime Minister. Albania has an institution known as the National Security Council, which has been virtually non‑existent for some time, yet bears the responsibility of analyzing all matters related to threats against national security. I call upon the President of the Republic to urgently convene the National Security Council in order to assess a situation that cannot be addressed merely through statements in Parliament, nor through the politicization of this matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, the head of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, stated that there is no official information indicating that Albania is a potential target of attacks, and he called for the continuation of the session according to the established agenda.
As the debate continued, the Chairman of the Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi, criticized the positions adopted by the majority and requested clarifications from Prime Minister Edi Rama concerning the government’s assessment of the warning issued by the United States Embassy.
