Prime Minister Edi Rama shared Wednesday images of this island along the Drin River, the country’s longest river, as an amazing destination waiting to be explored.

The island’s formation was a result of the Vau i Dejës hydro-power plant, which created an artificial lake that engulfed the hill where the medieval city of Sarda once stood. As a result, the entire area became the enchanting island it is today.

Sarda island stretches across 393 meters and rises up to an elevation of 130 meters, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

The island can be easily accessed from Rragam village, just 6 km away. Then you should take a boat to reach and explore the island.

The combination of historical and cultural significance, along with the natural beauty of the lake and hills bathed in the shimmering northern light, makes the island an unforgettable and must-see destination.

Prime Minister Edi Rama posted Sunday a video showing the man-made island, where the ruins of the medieval city of Sarda are found.

“Good morning and via these images showing Sarda (Shurdhau) island along Drin River, a spectacular destination for visitors to explore, I wish everyone a beautiful Sunday,” the Premier said.

The construction of the Vau i Dejës hydropower plant created an artificial lake that, in turn, encircled the hill on which the ruins of the medieval city of Sarda sit, transforming the entire area into the island it is today.

The small island contains interesting fragments of history that are worth visiting. The area was inhabited starting in the 7th or 8th centuries. During visit to site, you will be able to witness the necropolis situated outside of the city as well as have access to the ruins of a roman castle.

From one end to the other, the island stretches for a total of 393 meters while its elevation reaches 130 meters. The island is easily accessible from Rragam Village, situated only 6 km away for it, and it is well-worth visiting not only for its historical and cultural value but its natural beauty. The landscape of the lake and the surrounding hills, bathed in that famous northern silvery light, is simply unforgettable!
