TIRANA, Sept 26 /ATA/ / Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Thursday that this is a good day for the truth, while referencing the decision of the Court of Appeal that sentenced the Democratic Party MP, Ervin Salianji, to 1 year in prison, upholding the decision of the First Instance Court ruling.

Rama said that the truth took a long time to arrive, but in the end it did not forget to come.

“Despite the fact that today’s court decision and the legitimate conviction of an outstanding politician for relentless disinformation campaign up to the criminal form of False Reporting, through a file containing fabricated evidence and false testimony, will not make any difference in the activity of the cancer of defamation that poisons the blood of Albanian society more and more every day thanks to the countless digital channels of disinformation, this is a good day for the Truth”, said Rama.

Following is the PM’s reaction in full:

After 34 years of unlimited sovereignty as a state within a state, the self-proclaimed Kingdom of Defamers has harmed thousands and thousands of lives and families and polluted the public environment of Albania more and more each day, horrifying both young and old with the vile utterances of our political and media cesspool, through extreme abuse of Freedom of Speech and the triumph of the Freedom of Defamation as a monstrous social cancer, which is rooted in the vital organ of the legislators of Albania, where those who have made laws against defamation (and have legalized false reporting as a criminal act against justice) are also the most brutal and unrepentant transgressors of those laws.”

“In this country, where for 34 years no one, be them living or dead, has escaped the scum of the daily outpourings of those defamations, and where trials for countless defamation lawsuits against politicians drag on for years and then turn into nothing when the slanderers are punished with symbolic fines—playing the role of victims of an imaginary regime and defaming even more severely as soon as they receive the ridiculous penalty—today, for the first time, the courts of the country exercised the legally sanctioned right to impose criminal penalties for the most despicable category of Defamation, False Reporting, related to a story that a few years ago shook public opinion through a criminal fabrication against the leader of the Justice Reform process and the Socialist Party itself as the leading force of that reform, which produced the unwavering enmity of those afraid of a New Justice; which has finally been born and is growing outside the control of the politics that has influenced justice since the declaration of the independent Albanian state, where never before has any individual vested with political power been punished by an independent justice, until New Justice began to strike left and right, moving towards the path of everyone is equal before law!”

“The truth took a long time to arrive, but in the end, it did not forget to come. Despite today’s court decision and the legitimate conviction of a prominent politician for relentless disinformation activities that have reached the criminal level of False Reporting, through a file filled with fabricated evidence and false testimonies, nothing will change in the cancerous activity of Defamation that increasingly poisons the blood of Albanian society, thanks to the countless digital channels of disinformation. This is a good day for the truth.”
“We, the socialists in government, have renounced any lawsuits for defamation against journalists for many years, and this will not change for many reasons. However, if the moral damage and the untold pain of our families caused by unscrupulous media actors are a burden we are willing to shoulder as the cost of freedom for all media actors, we are not, and will never be ready to withdraw from legal proceedings against slanderers dressed in suits and party flags, armed with divisive and smearing hatred, which for 34 years have produced the most disgusting outbursts. Undoubtedly, this is a completely unequal battle, where in this case the ruling majority is an insignificant minority against the mountains and rivers of Defamation. Yet again, we will never come to terms with the parallel Kingdom of Slanderers as a fatal consequence of coexistence in a democratic state.”
