TIRANA, May 24 /ATA/ – Justice Minister Etilda Gjonaj said Monday that an extradition treaty with the United States of America ratified by Albanian Parliament a clear indicator of the Albanian government’s unwavering commitment to fighting organized crime and strengthening the rule of law.

Justice Minister said in a TV interview that the extradition treaty shows that Albanian government is ready to take the fight against organized crime to a whole new level and such treaties provide new tools for a more efficient fight against the new forms of crime in both countries.

Justice Minister hailed the extradition treaty as another milestone in the bilateral relations that is signed after 87 years.

“The extradition agreement we signed last December is designed not only to replace a treaty signed 87 years ago, but also relax the extradition procedures between the two countries,” Gjonaj said.

Gjonaj said that the new treaty provides for the widening and update of the criminal offences for which suspected criminals or those sentenced for crimes can be extradited, including a number of offences that were not part of the old agreement signed between the two countries 87 years ago in 1933, with the new categories including crimes in the areas of finance, tax and customs, corruption, environment, cyber crime, and all crimes for which laws stipulate a sentence of over one year in prison, excluding crimes of political nature.
