TIRANA, Aug 8 /ATA/ – Investing in the national road infrastructure with a direct impact on the country’s economy is a top priority for the Albanian government.

Some 1335 km of roads 1335 have been included in the government program and the World Bank-funded project on complete rehabilitation of the national roads from south to north, and from east to west of Albania.

World Bank said that 1,053 km of primary roads and 282 km of primary secondary roads of Albania improved thanks to continuous maintenance works.

According to WB, the road works have been carried in the framework of its Results-based Road Maintenance and Safety Project.

“The road works financed by the project led to lower vehicle operating costs, travel times, and future maintenance requirements on the project roads,” the Bank said.

The objectives of the project are to maintain the condition and improve the safety of the primary road and primary-secondary road networks, and strengthen sustainable and efficient road asset management and safety practices, for the benefit of road users.

This project includes road maintenance and safety of 336 km of roads in the northern region of Shkodër-Kukës, and 286 km of roads in central and north-eastern regions of Tirana and Diber.

The project also includes 419 km of roads in regions Fier, Elbasan, Korça, and 350 km in the southern region, Vlorë and Gjirokastër.
