The published images capture the river’s striking colors and magnificent landscape, with vacationers relaxing along the banks to cool off during the hot summer days.

Celebrated as one of Europe’s last untamed waterways, the Vjosa River draws a growing number of local and international visitors with its pristine landscapes and untouched beauty. Building on this ecological significance, the Vjosa Wild River National Park was established in 2023 as Europe’s first protected wild river national park, later gaining recognition within UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme.

Rama’s photos reveal another side of Albanian tourism, offering summer visitors a scenic river retreat.

TIRANA, August 2 /ATA/ Drive past the first two tunnels on the Arbri Road from Tirana. Once you see wooden stalls selling mountain tea and fresh vegetables, you have arrived. Park your car here to start the trail up to Petralba Castle. Also called White Stone Castle, it sits 778 meters high on a mountain ridge above the Mati Valley in Klos.

According to an onsite sign, Petralba was a main stronghold of the Kastriot family. Historian Marin Barleti and local tradition suggest that Gjon Kastrioti’s family lived here, making it the suspected birthplace of Skanderbeg.

The area is part of the “100 Villages” project and a good choice for history and nature lovers.

Before the final climb towards the castle, we surprisingly find ourselves in front of a large, new building on the side of the road.

The Historical and Cultural Museum of Klos is located there, inaugurated but closed to visitors. Maybe because it is summer, maybe because the area does not yet receive enough visitors, but from the outside we see that the museum is well-organized and modern.

As we learn from the table, the project was implemented through the European Union’s Cross-Border Cooperation Albania-North Macedonia program, in partnership between the municipality of Klos and several organizations.

From official sources we learn that the museum preserves and promotes the rich heritage of the region, which includes important ethnographic elements (traditional Mat clothing, tools, objects of daily life) as well as historical evidence of the area, including the strong connection with the Kastriots and the early history of gunpowder production in Klos.

The return route from the castle is also open and leads to the canyon of the Mat River. The further you go down, the more you feel the freshness of the valley surrounded by greenery.

At one point opposite, the large Vasha Bridge appears, part of the Arbit Road at the height of the slopes, while below is the old, historic Vasha Bridge above the Mat.

There are only a few kilometers of trail that bring you to a unique landscape between the two bridges.

Vasha Bridge, a centuries-old stone bridge, declared a First Category Cultural Monument, is located at the exit of a narrow canyon over the Mat River. The bridge has served as a historical and natural connecting bridge between Klos and the tourist village of Guri i Bardhë.

Local shops have changed the river area by the bridge into a nice place to rest, eat, and drink outdoors.

The river has enough water for swimming and diving, while children are the ones who enjoy it the most. The water is clear and reflects the greenery of the slopes, while on the bridge you can see the canyon between the mountains far away.

Enjoy a fresh Sunday escape near the capital. A newly paved access road now leads you down to one trail connecting two unmissable destinations./p.s./

TIRANA, February 20/ATA/ In the framework of the BeMed+ project and with the international methodology of the OSPAR Commission, the Municipality of Elbasan has taken over the task of identifying the real sources of pollution along the Shkumbin River.

Minister of Environment Sofjan Jaupaj wrote in a post in the social media that “Environmental monitoring is becoming a scientific and measurable process in the municipality of Elbasan”.

“By measuring and analyzing local waste, young people are not just building awareness, but providing the empirical data needed to create sustainable solutions for their city”, emphasized Jaupaj.

According to him, after identifying the real sources of pollution, there will be carried out intervention directly where the problem arises.

Mayor of Elbasan Gledian Llatja said that, “We have introduced a new river monitoring system to identify pollution sources and track them in real-time”.

This, added Llatja, will enable us to continuously monitor, take appropriate measures to identify and punish people who pollute the environment and rivers.

Each identified plastic waste is not considered simply as waste, but as concrete scientific data, which helps in the design of direct and effective measures against polluters.

This process serves simultaneously as an open environmental laboratory and as an educational platform for young people.

The initiative is implemented within the framework of the BeMed+ program, with the support of Beyond Plastic Med, IUCN and Surfrider Foundation Europe, as well as the INCA Albania organization.

Through this initiative, the municipality of Elbasan confirms its clear commitment to data-based environmental policies and concrete actions to protect the environment, placing the city on a sustainable path of green development. /k.s/a.f/r.e/p.s./

TIRANA, January 11/ATA/ The situation in the Drin river cascade appears stable, while water flow management is being carried out in a controlled way to minimize the risk of flooding in the areas of Nënshkodra.

According to data from the Albanian Electric Power Corporation (KESH), the water level at the Fierza hydroelectric power plant is 292.4 meters, 171.97 meters at the Koman hydroelectric power plant and 74.08 meters at the Vau i Dejës hydroelectric power plant.

Meanwhile, natural flows in the cascade are estimated at around 1,500 cubic meters per second at Fierza, 550 cubic meters per second at Koman and 150 cubic meters per second at Vau i Dejës, with a total of around 2,200 cubic meters of water per second.

Currently, according to KESH, the final discharge from the Vau i Dejës hydroelectric power plant is carried out through the discharge and energy production tunnel, with a total of about 1,400 m3/s, of which 900 m3/s is from the discharge tunnel and 500 m3/s from the production.

KESH said that about 60% of the water flows in the cascade are being discharged in a controlled manner, significantly reducing the possibility of flooding in the lower areas of the Drini basin.

The Albanian Electric Power Corporation said that the situation is being continuously monitored and that flow management is being carried out according to scenarios foreseen for the safety of inhabited areas. /j.p/p.s./
