TIRANA, July 22/ATA/- Deputy Minister of Defense Dorian Tola presented today to the Legal Affairs Committee the government’s proposal for legal changes that pave the way for the revival of the arms industry.

Tola said that the draft law, “On the regulation of the production, trade, research and development of weapons, ammunition, equipment and military technologies” comes as a necessity of geopolitical developments, the conflict in Ukraine and as a commitment of our country to the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO).

“The goal is to revive the military industry, as part of our commitments as a member of NATO. NATO heads of state supported the action plan for increasing the level of stockpiles of weapons and ammunition”, Tola said.

“Actually, there are two draft laws proposed. First, the creation of the state company for the production of weapons, military technologies. And secondly, the the creation of the defense industry agency, as a responsible regulatory structure, part of the Ministry of Defense,” Tola said.

On her part, the Vice Chairwoman of the Laws Committee, the opposition Democratic Party MP Dhurata Çupi opposed the draft law on regulation of the production and trade of weapons, calling it a clientelistic and criminal law.

Deputy Minister Tola said that the law for the restoration of the arms industry has been positively evaluated by the partners and comes as a demand of the time, seeing also Russia’s unprovoked aggression in Ukraine.

“It is in accordance with the commitments we have in the NATO”, said Tola. /p.s./

TIRANA, January 10 /ATA/ The Durrës Amphitheater, built at the end of the 1st century AD and discovered in 1966 by renowned archaeologist Vangjel Toçi, is attracting more and more local and foreign tourists.

Minister of Culture Elva Margariti said today that, “Thanks to the revitalization project, the Amphitheater of Durrës will come to light with all its millennial grandeur”.

The amphitheater of Durrës has been built according to Roman architecture at the end of the first century AD in the period of Emperor Trajan. It has been used as the arena of gladiatorial combats for nearly 2 centuries.

In the 5th century AD, the gladiatorial combats were stopped and the amphitheater began to be abandoned. A Byzantine chapel (chapel) was built on its premises. On the walls of the chapel, there are some frescoes and mosaics.

The large axis of the amphitheater is 127 meters, while the small axis is 103 meters. The dimensions of the oval arena are 63 and 39 meters, respectively.

The monument was discovered in 1966 by renowned archaeologist Vangjel Toçi. About half of the amphitheater has been discovered so far, with the western and northern part of the stairs, as well as a part of the galleries.

In the late 1990s, KFOR forces worked to open the arena from the ground up. Italian archaeologists from the University “La Sapienza” of Rome and the University of Chieti – Pescara, making use of modern equipment and technologies found out that there are still undiscovered buildings in the arena.

Based on the data gathered so far, it is thought that the amphitheater welcomed over 15 thousand spectators at a time.

The Durrës Amphitheater has an average size among 30 discovered amphitheaters of the ancient world from Rome to Budapest and Lyon./p.s./
