Following an extended period of challenges and damages—including those caused by the 2019 earthquake—the National Historical Museum is currently undergoing comprehensive restoration, reconstruction, and musealization. This represents the most significant intervention in the history of this landmark institution, implemented as part of the EU4Culture program, under the leadership of UNOPS, with the support of the European Union and the Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation (MEKI).

The Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation announced that, currently in the first phase, the works include: packaging and evacuation of artifacts, structural consolidation and reinforcement, facade renovation and roof insulation, installation of a CAM monitoring system, and facade restoration using modern technologies such as carbon fiber and column jacketing.

Meanwhile, MEKI is currently in the budgeting process for the second phase to ensure the continuation of this comprehensive transformation, which will include: underground additions housing laboratories and technical spaces; the interior glass “Oculus” façade and the iconic roof structure; modern MEP systems, fire protection, contemporary museology, and complete furnishing.
