TIRANA, Oct. 17 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha called on Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign on Saturday following violent protests across Albania.

Speaking to the media, Berisha urged Rama to step down immediately, warning against pushing Albania towards civil conflict.

“I tell Edi Rama once again: resign immediately. Do not lead Albania towards civil conflict, because you will be its main victim,” Berisha said.

“Resign and pave the way for a solution worthy of a NATO member state, a country with strong aspirations for European integration. Resign in the name of Albanians’ dreams, ideals and future,” he added.

Berisha described Saturday’s events in Tirana as a day of what he called the most extreme state violence and terror against young students and citizens.

He said civil disobedience had spread to Shkodër, Durrës, Elbasan, Vlorë, Korçë and other cities, following a general strike at universities and high schools a day ago.

“If yesterday was the day of a general strike by the country’s universities and high schools, today was the day of general civil disobedience by Albanian citizens across the country,” Berisha said.

Expressing solidarity with the protesters, he urged citizens to support the movement, citing what he described as a parental and civic duty to help restore the rule of law, freedoms and rights in Albania.

He also called on Democratic Party supporters and citizens across the country to mobilise in support of civil disobedience.

TIRANA, Sept 2 /ATA/ – The Minister of Health and Social Welfare Evis Sala resigned on Wednesday, saying she had accepted several important international positions related to her areas of expertise in oncology, artificial intelligence and innovation.

“Today was my last cabinet meeting as I have accepted several important international engagements in my field of expertise: oncology, artificial intelligence and innovation,” Sala said.

Sala took over as Health Minister a year ago, describing the role as a major responsibility in a sector facing significant challenges.

She thanked Prime Minister Edi Rama for his trust and support, as well as doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals and social welfare workers for their work to improve the system.

Sala also thanked members of the public who had contacted her with suggestions or requests for improvements, saying important progress had been made in healthcare over the past year.

“My commitment to Albania is not tied to a position. It is part of who I am and will continue through my knowledge, experience and international professional network,” she said.

“Positions have a beginning and an end. But responsibility and one’s connection to one’s country have no borders,” Sala added.

TIRANA, Feb 24 /ATA/ – Main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha called on Tuesday for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign, accusing him of involvement in corruption affairs and of obstructing the justice system.

Speaking at a news conference, Berisha said the Prime Minister was “the main obstacle to the functioning of justice,” describing this as a serious offence in itself.

Referring to a meeting of parliament’s Council on Mandates to review a request by the Special Anticorruption Prosecution Structure (SPAK) to change the security measure against Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, Berisha alleged that majority lawmakers had been instructed not to vote in favour of lifting her immunity.

“It is not the parliamentary group that determines the position on the prosecution’s request regarding immunities. It is the Council on Mandates that votes and decides,” Berisha said, accusing Socialist MPs of acting “in contradiction with the Constitution” by deferring a decision pending internal discussions.

He added that signals from international partners were clear that there should be no obstacles to justice, citing statements from the European Union and its institutions.

However, Berisha said Rama would ultimately be removed not by the justice system or the international community, but by Albanian voters.

“As has already become clear, Edi Rama will not resign. Justice cannot remove him, nor can the international community. He will be removed by the Albanian people,” Berisha said.

TIRANA, March 27 /ATA/ – The acting Mayor of the southern Albanian municipality of Himara, Jorgo Goro, currently in detention for corruption and alleged abuse of office, has resigned from office on Wednesday.

In a letter sent to Himara’s City Council, Goro provided arguments about his resignation, while rejecting any wrongdoing and the charges filed by the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organised Crime (SPAK).

Goro’s departure comes in the wake of his arrest on charges of abuse of power, stemming from accusations of fabricating documents to secure state-owned land for a private tourist resort.

Clarifying his position and rejecting any allegations, Goro said that he was not aware that the property documents were forged, since the documents are handed over to the mayor only for signature.

Prosecutors demanded the arrest of Mayor Jorgo Goro a day ago, citing his alleged involvement in creating fraudulent documents.

TIRANA, June 16 /ATA/ Kukës Mayor Safet Gjici resigned today after a sex scandal.

In a reaction on social media, Gjici apologized deeply to anyone who, according to him, saw that ugly video material spread today.

“After a difficult election campaign and confrontation with my opponents, after which I emerged victorious, unfortunately I fell into a trap prepared by the same people I faced in the elections. I am very sorry for the incident. For some time now, I have had an intimate relationship with the girl in question, but of course I have no excuse for what happened in the office despite being trapped”, Gjici emphasized.

Gjici said that, “I can no longer be the person who works in that state office, as I have betrayed the trust of those thousands of people who believed and worked with me to make Kukës an increasingly better city”.

“So today, I feel the minimum obligation to resign”, concluded Gjici./k.s/p.s./
