TIRANA, June 15 /ATA/ – Marking World Wind Day, Albania’s National Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation (AKKSHI) highlighted the findings of a research project showing the country’s strong potential for wind power development and its contribution to reducing electricity imports and environmental pollution.

The project, titled “Study of Wind Energy Potential in Areas of Interest in Albania and Its Contribution to Reducing Electricity Imports and Environmental Pollution,” was funded by the Ministry of Education under the National Research and Development Programme. It assessed 11 sites with wind energy potential across five geographic regions of the country.

According to AKKSHI, the study provides Albania’s first systematic techno-economic assessment of wind energy resources, creating an important data foundation for future investment planning in the sector.

Among the locations examined, the Shashica area in Kanina, near the south-western city of Vlora, was selected for a more detailed pilot study. The analysis was based on three years of on-site measurements collected through an anemometric tower and a multi-scenario assessment covering 64 parameter combinations.

“The study demonstrates through quantitative results that onshore wind energy projects in Albania are technically feasible and economically viable,” AKKSHI said.

Experts say greater use of wind power could play a significant role in strengthening Albania’s energy security while supporting environmental protection goals and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The findings also highlight the country’s potential to diversify its energy mix, reduce reliance on imports, and advance its green transition and sustainable development objectives.
