TIRANA, Sept. 10 /ATA/ – Albanian emigrants sent 621 million euros back to Albania in the first half of 2026, setting a new record for remittance inflows, according to Bank of Albania balance of payments data.

Remittances rose 16.7% from the same period a year earlier, extending the upward trend in financial flows from the Albanian diaspora to the domestic economy.

Growth accelerated in the second quarter, when remittances reached 347 million euros, up 24% year-on-year. That represented about 67 million euros more than in the second quarter of 2025.

The new six-month record consolidates remittances as a major source of foreign-currency inflows into the economy, alongside service exports, particularly tourism.

Remittances directly support recipient households and domestic consumption, while at the macroeconomic level they contribute to foreign-currency inflows and help meet the economy’s financing needs.

According to Ibrahimaj, the unemployment rate stood at 8.3% in 2025, while the employment rate reached 68.9%, marking an increase compared with the previous quarter. Labour force participation rose to 75.9%, improving year-on-year.

Speaking at a press conference, she said the average gross monthly wage in 2025 was 86,984 leks, up 4.3% from 2024.

The central bank reported that these transfers, which include money sent by Albanians living abroad to their families and relatives back home, were primarily channelled through banks and other financial institutions.

Italy and Greece remain the top countries of origin for these inflows, reflecting the large Albanian diaspora living and working in neighbouring countries.

The United Kingdom and Germany also ranked among the leading sources of remittances.

Remittances are a key source of income for many households in Albania and play an important role in supporting domestic consumption and economic stability.

TIRANA, Dec 11 /ATA/ – The flow of migrant remittances to Albania between January and September 2024 significantly increased compared with the same period of the previous year, data from the Bank of Albania showed.

Money sent home by Albanian citizens living abroad rose 14% year-on-year to 772 million euros during the January-September period, central bank said in a current account report on Wednesday.

The Bank highlighted that the flow of remittances via the formal banking system channels, as well as cash money has increased.

Most of the remittance flows come from Italy, Greece, Germany and England due to the high number of Albanian citizens living and working in these countries.

Central bank noted that high remittances flow, foreign direct investments and tourist spending have been the main factors causing strong devaluation of leading international currencies in general and the European single currency euro in particular.
