TIRANA, Oct 14 /ATA/ Average temperatures in the Western Balkans have risen by more than 2°C, nearly double the global average.

Meanwhile, the region is facing more droughts, floods, and wildfires. This situation has prompted the governments of the six countries in the region, during the second ministerial meeting on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans, to adopt a joint declaration, committing to take coordinated measures among themselves.

The Secretary-General of the Regional Cooperation Council, Amer Kapetanović, stated that this declaration is not just another political document, but a commitment to take action.

“By 2028, the six Western Balkan countries must reduce the use of the most polluting single-use plastics by 80%.
By 2030, plastic packaging should contain at least 30% recycled material, and 40% of municipal waste should be recycled.
The region must also protect 30% of land and marine areas, with at least 10% under strict protection,” emphasized Kapetanović.

To adapt, the region will need around 37 billion dollars in investments over the next decade.

The regional meeting was organized by the Regional Cooperation Council.
