TIRANA, July 2 /ATA/ Durrës boasts underwater treasures, which represent an added value for the city and could further encourage the development of archaeological tourism.

Since ancient times, Durrës has served as a key port on the Adriatic Sea and a significant center for shipbuilding. In this historic city, land-based archaeology is closely connected with underwater archaeology.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared footage of this park on Wednesday on social media, writing, “The Underwater Archaeological Park of Durrës, where every amphora tells a story and every wave carries an ancient memory.”
The beauties of Durrës extend not only on land, in the Archaeological Park, but also underwater, where various artifacts are hidden and can be seen by divers.

Over time, fragments of amphorae, shipwreck debris, and a variety of commercial and urban artifacts have been uncovered from ancient Dyrrachium. Albanian-led expeditions have been conducted since the 1970s and 1980s.

Underwater archaeology is a fairly recent scientific field that developed in the early 20th century, even though fascination with submerged sea objects dates back to ancient times. For many divers in the Mediterranean and its coastal areas, underwater archaeology is much more than a hobby. Pieces of statues, capitals, and various vessels reveal the story of life that flourished along these shores thousands of years ago.
