TIRANA, Feb 23 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Wednesday at a hearing with the investigative commission for waste treatment plants, that the investment and fee for waste treatment in Tirana is cheaper than in other European countries.

Asked why he did not contact a large company to carry out the waste treatment in Albania, Rama said, “I doubted that this could happen at the very beginning when this discussion was held.”

“My experience at the municipality of Tirana and then other contacts to find out about this part, have shown me that it was very expensive. And there is no point in discussing at length here, because I am telling you that for the same thing, for the same product, where in Tirana for an annual waste treatment of 365 thousand tons, the investment amount is 128 million euros. While for 100 thousand tons of waste treatment the UK spends 72 million pounds, which is more or less the same amount. For 120 thousand tons in France 130 million euros, for 100 thousand tons in Spain 76 million euros, and so on, ” said Rama.

On the other hand, Rama added, “if we study the charges, the international companies with high annual turnover
charge unaffordable figures for our public. We have set a fee of 29 euros. I personally think the 37 euro fee set by the municipality of Tirana, the previous one, 37 euros was not an abusive proposal in my judgement. Based on experience and the research on figures, the fee is 29 euros. That portion that was added here increasing to 430, that is the amount by 2047 for 29 euro tons per day. Meanwhile in France the fee is 152 euros. Does it make any sense to ask a French company to invest in Albania and charge 152 euros a ton. We had some contacts, completely informal, and I did not believe this, I honestly say. I was skeptical that this would happen. But since this process was an emergency and the insistence and conviction of all others was that it was viable.
