The volume of freight transported by rail in the second quarter of this year was estimated at 143 000 tons, increasing by 2.8 % compared to the same period of the previous year.

Number of passengers carried by railways during the reviewed period was 4091, up by 24.3% compared with the same period of 2023.

The country’s railway transport is expected to grow once the 34-km stretch of the railway section between the capital, Tirana, and the main port of Durres, and its branch to Rinas International Airport, becomes operational next year.

In the meantime, funding has been provided for construction of the Vore-Hani i Hotit railway line. This railway line is over 120 km long and connects Vore in central Albania to Hani i Hotit on the border with Montenegro, boosting regional connectivity in the Western Balkans and integration with EU markets. Construction work is set to begin next year and the project is scheduled to complete by 2030

The volume of freight transported by rail in April 2021 is 2,333 thousand/tonnes – km, increasing 3.1 times compared to April 2020.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) show that volume of freight transported by rail increased by 30.5 %, compared with monthly average for April period 2018-2020.

In the first four months of 2021, volume of freights transported by rail is 10,436 thousand tonnes-km, increasing by 11.1 % compared to the first four months of year 2020.
