TIRANA, February 21 /ATA/ “Language, society, the future” was the title of the event held today by the National Centre for Books and Reading in cooperation with the National Historical Museum on occasion of International Mother Language Day, which aimed to discuss language, linguistic and cultural diversity.

Director of the National Book and Reading Centre Alda Bardhyli said in her speech that, “Today, it is the International Mother Language Day proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999. On this date, almost all member states of the UN organize awareness events in protection of cultural diversity and mother tongue. This meeting brought together some of the most important names of Albanian philology. It has in focus the reflection on the need to protect the Albanian language, therefore we have called it, “Language, society, the future” to discuss the significance of the language and the cultural diversity it carries”.

Prof. Gjovalin Shkurtaj highlighted some issues that affect the Albanian language nowadays, emphasizing the influence of foreign words which should be controlled.

Prof. Xhevat Lloshi in his speech emphasized that, “After 50 years, we should see today’s language used in new circumstances. While expecting to become part of the European Union, the Albanian language will be part of all official documents; therefore the care of the Albanian language today should be rendered as care to serve Albanians at the cultural and national level”.

“Since the forms of communication have changed, we must show great care in maintaining the purity and identity of the language,” said Prof. Lloshi.

On the International Mother Language Day, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs expressed its pride that the Albanian language is one of the oldest languages in the Indo-European language family.

“Different from all languages and the only modern language, representative of a special branch of Indo-European languages, Albanian remains incomparable with any other language in the world,” said in a statement the Ministry of Foreign Affairs./p.s./
