TIRANA, Oct 14 /ATA/ The chief prosecutor of the Special Prosecution of the Republic of Albania, Arben Kraja, participated Friday in the second regional conference entitled “Effective Recovery of Assets in Compliance with European Standards” held in Podgorica, Montenegro, hosted by the Center Advice on Individual Rights in Europe – AIRE, in conjunction with the Regional Anti-Corruption Initiative Secretariat – RAI and the Ministry of Justice of Montenegro.

Participating in this Conference of high importance for the region were high functionaries and experts from the region and beyond, such as: the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abazovic; the deputy chief of mission of the British Embassy, Steve Arrick; the director of the Western Balkans Program of the AIRE center, Biljana Braithwaite; the head of the RAI Secretariat, Desislava Gotskova; the Minister of Justice of Montenegro, Marko Adzic; the Minister of the Interior of Montenegro, Filip Adzic, the EPPO European Prosecutor, Jaka Brezigar; Acting Supreme State Prosecutor of Montenegro, Maja Jovanovic; Special Chief Prosecutor of Montenegro, Vladimir Novovic; the prosecutor of the National Directorate of Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism in Italy, Michele del Prete; the deputy director of the Office for the Fight against Corruption and Organized Crime of Croatia, USKOK, Marija Vucko; the Public Prosecutor of the High Public Prosecutor’s Office of Serbia, Miljko Radisavljevic.

The aim of this project is to encourage regional cooperation through the creation of a regional network of asset recovery professionals who support negotiations between jurisdictions for comprehensive bilateral and multilateral agreements on asset sharing and ongoing capacity.
The special chief prosecutor Kraja presented the experience and results of the work of law enforcement authorities in Albania in the field of identification, seizure and confiscation of criminal assets, as well as making these assets available to increase the work capacities of law enforcement institutions.

On the margins of the conference, Kraja held meetings with counterparts from the countries of the region with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the fight against organized crime, money laundering and corruption in the Western Balkans region.

“Amid the biggest challenges for the regional dialogue, communication within the judiciary continued seamlessly. Despite the setbacks to ensure independence, transparency and responsibility of the holders of the most critical positions, in the judiciary we have always met people who are committed to their mission, because everyone is aware of the fact that trust in the judiciary can only be built on the basis of the independent and impartial action of each individual prosecutor and judge,” said Biljana Braithwaite, director of the AIRE Center.

Braithwaite underlined that the future of the fight against crime hinges on the cooperation and regional dialogue brought today in Podgorica. Desislava Gotskova, director of the Regional Initiative Against Corruption, underlined the importance of knowledge transfer and exchange of good practices.
