Perched on a strategic hilltop, the castle is reached via a scenic rural route lined with traditional homes and rolling green hills, creating a peaceful setting before visitors arrive at the centuries-old fortress.

Though weathered by time, the castle’s surviving walls stand as a testament to its historical importance and former defensive role.

Today, Preza Castle has become a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors seeking panoramic views and a closer connection with Albania’s cultural heritage. Nature lovers and photographers frequently visit the site to capture its golden sunsets.

Adjacent to the castle stands a mosque that continues to serve as a place of worship for the local community.

Visitors can also sample traditional Albanian cuisine at a nearby restaurant, while the surrounding grounds provide space for picnics, outdoor games and relaxation amid the countryside.

Today, Preza Castle remains both a lasting reminder of Albania’s past and a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape the pace of modern life.

“We are very grateful to our team of architects and our partners who delivered on this project,” CHwB Albania said via the social media, a non-governmental organization committed to preservation and protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, affected by conflicts, disasters or neglect.

The Castle of Preza is a 1st category monument and a fortification of great importance. It has been built during the 15th century and is an asset with a long history of intervention phases. The earthquake of November 2019 had a catastrophic impact on most of the tangible cultural heritage in central Albania including the castle of Preza.

A restoration and reinforcement project kicked off and it went from reconstruction to structural rehabilitation, reinforcement using innovative materials in combination with traditional techniques, and use of saved original materials. It represents a project of monument recovery, with its treatment of existing pathologies, not addressed for years, and the improvement of its structural integrity with the final goal of bringing it back to the community of Preza.
